Bhubaneshwar, Nov 22: The country's largest BPO company Genpact Thursday broke ground for its special economic zone (SEZ) here, which it is jointly developing with the Orissa government, official sources said.
Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik laid the foundation stone for the new facility in the presence of Genpact President and CEO Pramod Bhasin.
The commissioning of this SEZ facility, spread over an area of 12.145 acre, would be done in three phases between 2009 and 2011, Bhasin said. "On completion, 500,000 square feet of office space will be available to seat over 4,000 employees for Genpact," he told reporters.
"It is a matter of great pride for Orissa that Genpact has decided to set up operations in the state," State Energy Minister S N Patro said, adding that the BPO company's operation would work as a catalyst for other IT companies to invest in the state.
While Andhra Pradesh government has allotted a 50-acre plot of land, Rajasthan government has offered 25 acre of land for setting up SEZs in their states to Genpact, Bhasin said.

IIIT all set for a start
Bhubaneswar: The state government announced that the Indian Institute of Information Technology (HIT) will start functioning from the coming academic session with an initial student intake of 60.
The IIIT, for which President APJ Abdul Kalam had laid the foundation stone in 2006 in Gothapatna area on the city's outskirts, will begin operations in September from a rented accommodation in Fortune Towers here and move to its own campus as and when it is ready, IT minister S N Patro said.
According to Patro, the appointment of director and faculty members for the IIIT will be done soon. "At least seven persons from the state, who are working with universities in the US, have evinced keenness to be associated with the upcoming institute as visiting faculty. We will be using their expertise to give the students quality education and training," he said. ,
The IIIT, he added, will go a long way in meeting the research and development as well as academic requirements of IT institutes and software organisations of the state. The government had earlier given 23 acres at Gothapatna to the IIIT, while another 92 acres has been identified at a nearby location for a proposed 'IT Knowledge Park'.
The minister said the government, with a view of giving the IT sector a fillip, has already identified 671 acres spread over five villages on the city's outskirts for the second Infocity.
The land will be acquired soon from Durgapur (59 acres), Gadakasipur (227 acres), Arisal (122 acres), Harapur (204 acres) and Harekrushnapur (56 acres) villages. The Pune-based Monarch Architects has been entrusted with the job of designing the second Infocity, he added.
The first Infocity, which was developed in the nineties, is now fully occupied and boasts of the presence of biggies like Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services.
Officials said the state witnessed a 58 per cent jump in IT exports in 2006-07 with the total exports touching Rs 732 crore compared to Rs 465 crore the previous year. A total of 32 IT units, including 19 new ones, contributed to the total exports during the last fiscal.

Small-unit impetus to IBM growth
Calcutta, Sept. 9: IBM India is opening offices in tier II and tier III cities to tap small and medium businesses (SMBs).
The company said India, China, Korea and the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations were the fastest growing markets for small and medium businesses.
“After Jamshedpur, we will go to Nashik, Surat, Bhubaneswar, Jaipur, Madurai and Ludhiana,” said Vivek Malhotra, vice president — global small & medium business, IBM India. The company earlier opened similar centres in Visakhapatnam, Chandigarh, Nagpur, Coimbatore, Goa, Bhopal and Lucknow.
India contributes 24 per cent to IBM’s growth in the SMB segment, while China contributes 35 per cent.
The company’s SMB division contributes nearly 20 per cent to its total revenue.
“In the eastern region, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa, Bengal and Assam have a huge potential in the segment,” Malhotra said.
“The offices will help us in being close to our customers. This presence is critical since the SMBs employ almost 70 per cent of the global workforce,” said Malhotra.
In the Indian subcontinent, the SMBs have spent around $7.7 billion to ramp up their infotech infrastructure. Research agency ACNielsen forecasts this amount to go up substantially in 2008. There are over nine million SMBs in India and each of them spends around Rs 30 lakh on IT solutions.
IBM plans to revamp its solutions to meet SMB needs. It will scale down solution and application functionalities to suit operational-management capabilities and budgets.
“SMBs are looking for operational efficiency, lower cost of operations, security and an infrastructure that’s easy to use. We are investing to strengthen education, demand generation and technical support to business partners,” Malhotra said.
IBM has increased incentives to its partners who are associated with SMBs.
The company has presence in 300 Chinese cities through 9,000 business partnerships. In India, it is present in 200 cities and has 2,500 partners.
According to figures released in the IBM PartnerWorld 2007, the company will open offices in 25 tier I and II cities in China by the end of the year.

Wipro Tech launches Mission 10X
BANGALORE: Mission 10X, the initiative by Wipro Technologies launched here on Thursday, is to meet head-on the looming skills shortage that threatens to affect the IT industry’s growth.
Wipro Chairman, Azim Premji, told a gathering of academicians that “Mission 10X is to create systematic and systemic changes to current teaching-learning practices in engineering education. We hope by training the [members of the] faculty along industry standards, the employability level of engineering graduates and diploma holders will improve”.
India was turning out almost five lakh engineering graduates and diploma holders annually, while the output in China was estimated at six lakh, in the U.S., 75,000 and in Germany 25,000, Mr. Premji said.
Responding to questions, Mr. Premji and IIT-Bombay faculty Kannan Moudgalya, said that the current financial year would see 1,000 faculty trained, with sessions also planned in smaller centres like Bhubaneswar and Visakhapatnam. Eventually, the whole country is to be covered, including the North East and by 2010.
“While a fresh look at the engineering curriculum is necessary, we have only come to the level of having discussions with the Union Education Ministry. Meanwhile we can improve the quality of faculty and teaching,” Mr. Premji said.

Orissa red carpet for IT units
Bhubaneswar is fast emerging a favoured destination for IT companies.
Not only it has earned the unique distinction of the only state capital in eastern India to have the presence of the big four i.e. Infosys, Satyam, TCS and Wipro, but also it is making all out effort to attract other major IT players in the country.
The persistent efforts of the state IT department is reflected in the signing of an MoU between MindTree Consulting Pvt Ltd with the Orissa government for setting up a development centre in Bhubaneswar today.
The company has been allotted approximately 30 acres in Infocity and will be starting construction of the centre within the next financial year. The centre is likely to come up within a period of 12-18 months.
MindTree will employ at least 1000 software professionals within a period of 2 years of their operation and has long term plan of employing about 5000 people at Bhubaneswar over next five years.
As the first step, MindTree has started recruiting from Orissa and recently recruited a few MBA graduates from Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar.
MindTree is billed to be the biggest IT recruiter in the state.
The largest of them at present, Infosys, proposes to take its head count to 4,500 by 2008.
The MoU was singed by Subroto Bagchi, chief operating officer of MindTree, and SN Tripathy, secretary IT department, Orissa government in the presence of chief minister Naveen Patnaik, IT minister SN Patro and chief secretary Subas Pani and other senior officials.
Bagchi said, MindTree, at present, is engaged in providing affordable business and technology solutions through its global software development.
The company has its offices in California and Illinois in the US, UK, France, Middle East, India, Singapore, Japan and Australia.
While Infosys and Satyam are present in the city since 1996-97, TCS and Wipro have acquired land in Infocity recently.
TCS has engaged the world renowned architect and planner Venkat Raman & Associates for designing the Bhubaneswar centre.

TCS to set up Orissa centre in two years
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the software development and services arm of India's diversified conglomerate Tata group, will set up a global software development centre (GSDC) here in two years.
The centre will initially employ about 200 IT professional and this may go up to 1500 later on, said a top official of the state information and technology department.
The Orissa government has allotted 45 acres of land at the 'Infocity' industrial park located on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. The foundation stone for the centre was laid by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Wednesday.
TCS' development centre will open up opportunities for local youths and put Orissa on the IT map, the official said.
Bhubaneswar is becoming an important centre for information and communication technologies. During the current year, growth in software exports from Orissa is likely to exceed 40 percent and touch Rs.5 billion, he said.
Apart from Infocity, the state government has a seven-storey Fortune Tower with features to connect its occupants to the world and another seven-storey Tower 2000 dedicated to smaller IT units.
TCS took possession of about 3,800 square feet at Fortune Tower last month and started its preliminary activities there.

Orissa targets $500-m software exports by 2012

BETTER CONNECTIVITY: The Orissa Chief Minister, Mr Naveen Patnaik, flanked by the Nasscom President, Mr Kiran Karnik, and the Orissa Minister for IT & Energy, Mr S.N. Patro, at a conference in the Capital on Friday. — Ramesh Sharma
The Government of Orissa has set a target of $500 million in software exports by 2011-12, said the Chief Minister, Mr Naveen Patnaik, here on Friday. After Infosys, Satyam and TCS, the State is expecting others such as Mind Tree, Genpact and Hexaware Technologies to be soon operational.
Speaking at a conference organised by Nasscom on `Investment opportunities in IT and ITES sectors in Orissa', the Chief Minister said, "The total investment proposal that we have received is almost Rs 4 lakh crore. We have established single window clearance. Four IT parks are coming up in the State, of which two are approved and being set up by Genpact and DLF.
"Another two are likely to get approval by the end of this month. The Government is giving physical and social infrastructure a top priority. We will invest Rs 25, 000 crore to improve the roads over the next five years. We will spend Rs 250 crore for upgradation of Bhubaneshwar airport."
He added that the State expected some of the top hospitals such as AIIMS, Apollo and major hotel chains to come up, this would also drive demand for IT specialists.
The Government will be setting up an Indian Institute of Information Technology, IIT Kharagpur campus at Bhubaneshwar and National Institute of Science Education and Research. Infosys has tied up with various engineering colleges to train students in a manner that would match corporate recruitment standards.
