Calcutta, Sept. 9: IBM India is opening offices in tier II and tier III cities to tap small and medium businesses (SMBs).
The company said India, China, Korea and the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations were the fastest growing markets for small and medium businesses.
“After Jamshedpur, we will go to Nashik, Surat, Bhubaneswar, Jaipur, Madurai and Ludhiana,” said Vivek Malhotra, vice president — global small & medium business, IBM India. The company earlier opened similar centres in Visakhapatnam, Chandigarh, Nagpur, Coimbatore, Goa, Bhopal and Lucknow.
India contributes 24 per cent to IBM’s growth in the SMB segment, while China contributes 35 per cent.
The company’s SMB division contributes nearly 20 per cent to its total revenue.
“In the eastern region, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa, Bengal and Assam have a huge potential in the segment,” Malhotra said.
“The offices will help us in being close to our customers. This presence is critical since the SMBs employ almost 70 per cent of the global workforce,” said Malhotra.
In the Indian subcontinent, the SMBs have spent around $7.7 billion to ramp up their infotech infrastructure. Research agency ACNielsen forecasts this amount to go up substantially in 2008. There are over nine million SMBs in India and each of them spends around Rs 30 lakh on IT solutions.
IBM plans to revamp its solutions to meet SMB needs. It will scale down solution and application functionalities to suit operational-management capabilities and budgets.
“SMBs are looking for operational efficiency, lower cost of operations, security and an infrastructure that’s easy to use. We are investing to strengthen education, demand generation and technical support to business partners,” Malhotra said.
IBM has increased incentives to its partners who are associated with SMBs.
The company has presence in 300 Chinese cities through 9,000 business partnerships. In India, it is present in 200 cities and has 2,500 partners.
According to figures released in the IBM PartnerWorld 2007, the company will open offices in 25 tier I and II cities in China by the end of the year.

Wipro BPO to hire more
Calcutta, Sept. 6: Wipro BPO plans to ramp up its headcount to 25,000 from 20,000 in the next couple of years.
The company expects 20 per cent of its revenues to come from abroad in the next five years.
V. Anandkumar, vice-president (people supply chain and employee branding) of Wipro BPO, said, “We have 3,000 people in our Calcutta centre and expect to hire another 500 in the next six months. We have grown by 100 per cent in this city in the last year.”
BPO work in finance and accounting will be taken up in the city, for which the company will make additional recruitment.
These services are now provided by the Chennai centre. Anandkumar said the city centre lost 5 mandays last year whereas other centres lost 1-2 days.
The company is open to expanding in other parts of the state, such as Siliguri, provided there is adequate infrastructure and availability of manpower.
In international operations, Wipro recently opened a centre in Shanghai and plans to open one more in China.
The company has also studied the feasibility of a centre in the Philippines where many companies have set up shop.
“We liked what we saw and could consider it as our next location in this part of the globe,” Anandkumar said.
In Europe, the company has recently set up a centre in Bucharest, which employs nearly 100 people.
Wipro is also exploring locations in the US and South America. In India, besides the expansion of the Hyderabad facility, centres are coming up in Bhubaneswar, Visakhapatnam, Kochi and Noida.
The company is also trying to get more clients from within the country and the target areas are telecom and banking. India contributes about 2 per cent to its revenues. Acquisitions are also part of the company’s growth plans, Anandkumar said.

Wipro Tech launches Mission 10X
BANGALORE: Mission 10X, the initiative by Wipro Technologies launched here on Thursday, is to meet head-on the looming skills shortage that threatens to affect the IT industry’s growth.
Wipro Chairman, Azim Premji, told a gathering of academicians that “Mission 10X is to create systematic and systemic changes to current teaching-learning practices in engineering education. We hope by training the [members of the] faculty along industry standards, the employability level of engineering graduates and diploma holders will improve”.
India was turning out almost five lakh engineering graduates and diploma holders annually, while the output in China was estimated at six lakh, in the U.S., 75,000 and in Germany 25,000, Mr. Premji said.
Responding to questions, Mr. Premji and IIT-Bombay faculty Kannan Moudgalya, said that the current financial year would see 1,000 faculty trained, with sessions also planned in smaller centres like Bhubaneswar and Visakhapatnam. Eventually, the whole country is to be covered, including the North East and by 2010.
“While a fresh look at the engineering curriculum is necessary, we have only come to the level of having discussions with the Union Education Ministry. Meanwhile we can improve the quality of faculty and teaching,” Mr. Premji said.
