Orissa Plans to Make Huge Investments on Infrastructure

With major IT companies, including TCS and Infosys, setting up base in Orissa, the State Government today announced investments of Rs 25,000 crores for improving road infrastructure in the next five years.
The state, which has set a target of 500 million dollar software exports by 2011-12, would also spend Rs 250 crores to upgrade the Bhubaneshwar Airport through the Airport Authority of India, Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said at a conference on 'Investment Opportunities in IT and ITES sectors in Orissa' organised by NASSCOM here.

"We are aiming at a quantum jump in software exports and has set a target of 500 million dollar exports by 2011-12. With Infosys, Satyam and TCS expanding and Mind Tree Consulting, Genpact, Hexware Technologies and other major companies becoming operational soon, we are confident of even exceeding this target," Patnaik said.

Four new IT parks are also coming up in the state, he said.

"The two IT parks, being set up by Genpact and DLF, have already received in principle SEZ approval and another two are likely to be approved by the end of this month", he added.

The availability of qualified manpower is an important factor for IT industries and we already have 88 engineering and MCA colleges and 176 polytechnics, Patnaik said.
"Anticipating increased demand for such institutes, we are setting up a number of additional centers of excellence that include Indian Institute of Information Technology and IIT Kharagpur campus at Bhubaneswar", he said.

Orissa red carpet for IT units

Bhubaneswar is fast emerging a favoured destination for IT companies.
Not only it has earned the unique distinction of the only state capital in eastern India to have the presence of the big four i.e. Infosys, Satyam, TCS and Wipro, but also it is making all out effort to attract other major IT players in the country.

The persistent efforts of the state IT department is reflected in the signing of an MoU between MindTree Consulting Pvt Ltd with the Orissa government for setting up a development centre in Bhubaneswar today.
The company has been allotted approximately 30 acres in Infocity and will be starting construction of the centre within the next financial year. The centre is likely to come up within a period of 12-18 months.
MindTree will employ at least 1000 software professionals within a period of 2 years of their operation and has long term plan of employing about 5000 people at Bhubaneswar over next five years.

As the first step, MindTree has started recruiting from Orissa and recently recruited a few MBA graduates from Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar.

MindTree is billed to be the biggest IT recruiter in the state.
The largest of them at present, Infosys, proposes to take its head count to 4,500 by 2008.

The MoU was singed by Subroto Bagchi, chief operating officer of MindTree, and SN Tripathy, secretary IT department, Orissa government in the presence of chief minister Naveen Patnaik, IT minister SN Patro and chief secretary Subas Pani and other senior officials.
Bagchi said, MindTree, at present, is engaged in providing affordable business and technology solutions through its global software development.

The company has its offices in California and Illinois in the US, UK, France, Middle East, India, Singapore, Japan and Australia.
While Infosys and Satyam are present in the city since 1996-97, TCS and Wipro have acquired land in Infocity recently.

TCS has engaged the world renowned architect and planner Venkat Raman & Associates for designing the Bhubaneswar centre.

A team led by N Chandrasekharan, executive vice president of TCS, had recently met the state chief secretary and showed him the development plans of a Bhubaneswar centre.

At present TCS has taken a full floor in Fortune Tower and plans to start the centre within this calendar year with about 250 software professionals.

Similarly, a team from Wipro Technologies led by it CIO, Laxman Badiga had also visited Bhubaneswar last month to finalise Wipro's plans to start their development centre here.

Wipro, sources said, is keen to start its operation in the city within this calendar year with about 250 software professionals from one of the existing buildings in Infocity.

Other major IT companies including Hexaware Technologies, Ramtech Systems etc have also finalised plans for starting operations at Bhubaneswar.

TCS to set up Orissa centre in two years

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the software development and services arm of India's diversified conglomerate Tata group, will set up a global software development centre (GSDC) here in two years.

The centre will initially employ about 200 IT professional and this may go up to 1500 later on, said a top official of the state information and technology department.

The Orissa government has allotted 45 acres of land at the 'Infocity' industrial park located on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. The foundation stone for the centre was laid by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Wednesday.

TCS' development centre will open up opportunities for local youths and put Orissa on the IT map, the official said.

Bhubaneswar is becoming an important centre for information and communication technologies. During the current year, growth in software exports from Orissa is likely to exceed 40 percent and touch Rs.5 billion, he said.

Apart from Infocity, the state government has a seven-storey Fortune Tower with features to connect its occupants to the world and another seven-storey Tower 2000 dedicated to smaller IT units.
TCS took possession of about 3,800 square feet at Fortune Tower last month and started its preliminary activities there.
