IIIT all set for a start

Bhubaneswar: The state government announced that the Indian Institute of Information Technology (HIT) will start functioning from the coming academic session with an initial student intake of 60.

The IIIT, for which President APJ Abdul Kalam had laid the foundation stone in 2006 in Gothapatna area on the city's outskirts, will begin operations in September from a rented accommodation in Fortune Towers here and move to its own campus as and when it is ready, IT minister S N Patro said.

According to Patro, the appointment of director and faculty members for the IIIT will be done soon. "At least seven persons from the state, who are working with universities in the US, have evinced keenness to be associated with the upcoming institute as visiting faculty. We will be using their expertise to give the students quality education and training," he said. ,

The IIIT, he added, will go a long way in meeting the research and development as well as academic requirements of IT institutes and software organisations of the state. The government had earlier given 23 acres at Gothapatna to the IIIT, while another 92 acres has been identified at a nearby location for a proposed 'IT Knowledge Park'.

The minister said the government, with a view of giving the IT sector a fillip, has already identified 671 acres spread over five villages on the city's outskirts for the second Infocity.

The land will be acquired soon from Durgapur (59 acres), Gadakasipur (227 acres), Arisal (122 acres), Harapur (204 acres) and Harekrushnapur (56 acres) villages. The Pune-based Monarch Architects has been entrusted with the job of designing the second Infocity, he added.

The first Infocity, which was developed in the nineties, is now fully occupied and boasts of the presence of biggies like Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services.

Officials said the state witnessed a 58 per cent jump in IT exports in 2006-07 with the total exports touching Rs 732 crore compared to Rs 465 crore the previous year. A total of 32 IT units, including 19 new ones, contributed to the total exports during the last fiscal.
